GATE Centre of Excellence “Big Data for Smart Society” is a research institute, established in 2019 in Sofia, Bulgaria as a joint initiative between Sofia University Bulgaria, Chalmers University of Technology (Chalmers) and Chalmers Industrial Technology (CIT), Sweden.
GATE’s mission is to:
- Establish a world-class ecosystem for basic and applied Big Data and Artificial Intelligence research and innovation
- Be a focal point between academia, government and industry for Big Data and Artificial intelligence domain
- Serve as a catalyst for economic growth based on data-science innovation, digitalization, and knowledge-based entrepreneurship across various economic sectors.

With respect to its intensive development, GATE CoE is looking for Researchers in Image Processing and Visual Data Analytics (R2, R3).
Responsibilities
- Develop new methods, models, and algorithms for processing visual information;
- Lead teams of researchers, analysts, software developers, and engineers working on projects requiring Image Processing and Visual Analytics on the desktop, on the server, and on the cloud;
- Develop capacity and build potential for working on projects requiring visual information processing within the Lab;
- Keep up-to-date with the latest technology trends and relevant technical standards in the area of visual information processing, such as Deep Machine Learning for Visual Data Analytics, Generative AI for Visual Applications, Explanatory AI, etc.;
- Scientific paper writing;
- Engage in appropriate training and development opportunities.
Skills, Experience and Qualifications
- Experienced researcher (R2): A PhD Degree in computer science, data science, or software engineering, or a Master’s Degree in these fields plus a minimum of 4 years of industry-based relevant R&D experience;
- Established researcher (R3): A PhD Degree in computer science, data science, or software engineering, or a Master’s Degree in these fields plus a minimum of 7 years of industry-based relevant R&D experience;
- Knowledge of the methods of Mathematical Foundations of Computer Graphics, Deep Learning for Visual Information Processing (i.e., CNN), and experience in applying them in visual information processing;
- At least 3 years of industrial experience working as a software developer, data analyst, software or data engineer;
- Proven record of projects for processing visual information and visual data analysis;
- Scopus-indexed publications in the area of visual information processing or data analysis;
- Proficiency in programming using C/C++ and Python. esp. memory management, multithreading, etc.
- Experience working under both Windows and UNIX OS (Linux, Mac OS, Solaris, etc.)
- Advanced communication, presentation, and influencing skills to be able to explain the value of their research to the research community;
- Fluency in English.
Optional
- Participation in innovation, knowledge transfer and commercialization projects;
- Practical skills of using Unity, Unreal, Volcan and OpenGL
- Past experience of working with a wide variety of constituents and stakeholders;
- Teaching practice in Higher Education in the area of computer vision, computer animation, image processing or visual data analysis;
- Practical Skills in using other programming languages such as Java, C#, R, and others;
- Ability to find ways to create value and deliver results by working both independently and as part of a team with professionals at all levels and of various disciplines.
