GATE Centre of Excellence “Big Data for Smart Society” is a research institute, established in 2019 in Sofia, Bulgaria as a joint initiative between Sofia University Bulgaria, Chalmers University of Technology (Chalmers) and Chalmers Industrial Technology (CIT), Sweden.
GATE’s mission is to:

With respect to its intensive development, GATE CoE is looking for a DevOps Engineer.
Responsibilities
Common
- Streamline DevOps practices across multiple research teams, including city planners, political scientists, mathematicians, data scientists, and AI researchers.
- Introduce and maintain best practices in containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and infrastructure-as-code solutions to ensure scalability and reliability.
- Architect and implement end-to-end automation pipelines supporting the full lifecycle of research, including data ingestion, model training, and deployment.
- Design and maintain infrastructure for high-performance computing (HPC), including clusters, advanced GPUs, and large-scale storage systems.
- Ensure reliability, observability, and security of infrastructure through robust monitoring, logging, and alerting systems.
- Troubleshoot infrastructure and deployment issues proactively.
- Collaborate closely with researchers, software developers, and external academic and industry partners to improve CI/CD workflows.
- Provide clear and updated documentation of infrastructure, pipelines, and automation processes.
One or more of the following responsibilities
- Evaluate new DevOps tools and technologies to improve existing workflows.
- Mentor or support team members and research partners in adopting DevOps practices.
- Contribute to proposals for acquiring additional computational resources or tools.
Skills, Experience and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related fields, or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience in designing scalable infrastructure architectures and deployment pipelines.
- Proficiency in containerization tools (Docker, Kubernetes) and CI/CD platforms.
- Hands-on experience with automation and orchestration tools, and scripting languages (Python, Bash, Ruby).
- Solid understanding of Linux/UNIX operating systems, networking fundamentals, and security best practices.
- Proven ability to manage and troubleshoot HPC resources or large-scale computational infrastructure.
- Good collaboration and communication skills, including the ability to clearly explain technical solutions to researchers from diverse backgrounds.
